“Light, Air, Metal, Stone: The Paradoxical Materialities of Ruth Asawa and Isamu Noguchi” was an imagined exhibition at Dia: Chelsea that brought together two of the most famous Japanese-American sculptors of the 20th century.  It focused on materialities and the artists’ unusual manipulation of them - light-as-air woven sculptures made of metal wire by Asawa, and sinewy stone by Noguchi.

I aimed to translate that lightness to the visuals of this accompanying mini catalog, which focused on floating blocks of text and imagery. The cover, which layered close-ups of the artists’ pieces, had an almost abstract, diaphanous effect. Structurally, the catalog was designed like a mirror. The front half focused on Asawa, and the back half on Noguchi. The center spread where the sections meet featured quotes from both on sculpture - resulting in a kind of imagined dialogue.

Accompanying merchandise for the exhibit, a t-shirt and tote bag, borrowed text and image elements from the catalog cover. Its minimalist feel remained consistent with the rest of the exhibition materials.
